The Generac Guardian 17kW standby generator package includes the 200-amp, service-entrance-rated Smart Switch, an automatic transfer switch capable of managing generator power for an entire home. The 6243 is a fully automatic generator package that protects your home from loss of power, even when you are not present. Guardian Generators carry a 5-year limited consumer warranty in residential installations.
The 6243 standby generator runs on either LP (propane) or natural gas, and is factory configured for natural gas. Conversion to LP during installation is fast and easy. Fuel consumption is directly affected by electrical loads and varies continuously as the load changes. LP gas consumption is 1.6 gallons per hour at half load. Half-load consumption of natural gas is about 183 cubic feet per hour. Running on LP gas the generator can produce up to 17,000 watts of power, or 16,000 watts on natural gas. Required fuel pressure to generator fuel inlet at all load ranges 3.5" - 7" water column for natural gas or 10" - 12" water column for LP gas.
A specially designed Generac 992cc overhead-valve industrial V-twin engine supplies power to the generating unit. It has a pressurized oil lubrication system similar to an automobile that keeps the engine lubricated. Automatic shutdown for low oil pressure or high engine temperature protects the engine from damage.
Design features include moly plasma rings and plateau honed cylinder walls with 'Spiny-Lok' construction for extra rigidity, reduced wear, and low oil consumption. With solid state ignition and an extended maintenance period of 200 hours or 2 years, the Generac 6243 will provide power through extended outages that last for days.
The state of the art Evolution Controller manages generator and transfer switch operation. When an outage occurs, the Controller senses the outage and waits 10 seconds (dealer programmable from 2 to 1500 seconds), then starts the generator and signals the Smart Switch to move the house onto generator power. When power is restored, the controller signals the switch to return to utility power, runs the generator in a cool-down period, and shuts it down.
While the generator operates, the Evolution monitors and regulates the engine speed and controls the voltage to produce power utility-grade power suitable for all home electronics and appliances. Status updates, fault messages, and reports are shown on the controller's two-line display.
The controller also includes a smart battery charger that maintains the battery and monitors its ability to retain a charge. When the battery begins to fail, the controller notifies that homeowner to replace it―before the battery can no longer start the engine.
The optional Mobile Link accessory uses the cellular text message system to send status messages to your cellular phone, and to communicate with a web-based dashboard that gives you access to your generator from your smart phone, computer, or tablet. Program exercise periods, view reports, and schedule or check on maintenance from your home or anywhere with internet access.
The optional basic wireless monitor allows you to check generator status from inside your home. The advanced wireless monitor includes a controller display for viewing reports, testing the generator, or performing generator programming and tests.
The Smart Switch automatic transfer switch (ATS) is a service-entrance-rated transfer switch that selects between utility power and generator power. Typically, the Smart Switch installs between the home's main service panel and the utility meter. During normal operation, the ATS selects utility power. When an outage occurs, the switch disconnects the utility lines and connects the generator to the main circuit breaker panel.
The Smart Switch can manage two air conditioners without additional hardware. The addition of a Power Management Module Kit and additional Power Management Modules, allows the use of up to six high-voltage, high-current loads.
The power generating unit produces AC electrical current at 240 volts. The generator's brushless design reduces noise and provides years of service. A rotating magnetic field and skewed stator produce a smooth, clean electrical signal with exceptional voltage and frequency regulation, even under heavy electrical loads. Fast response during continually changing loads allows for a constant 60-hertz AC signal with ± 1 percent voltage regulation.
With an enclosure designed for weather resistance and an attractive epoxy finish, the 6243 will last for years, even in typically harsh coastal climates. Lockable ports allow access for maintenance while discouraging tampering. The fully enclosed muffler attenuates noise to 66db, making its compact design neighborhood and yard friendly. The unit installs on a gravel bed or concrete pad and is just 48 inches wide, 25 inches deep, and 29 inches high.
