Who is Generac?
Since 1959, Generac Power Systems has been designing and manufacturing backup power generators for residential, commercial and industrial applications. They have grown to be the world's largest provider of residential standby generators. Generac generators has revolutionized the commercial market with the first cost effective product line meeting the needs of small and mid-sized businesses.
The Generac Model 6237 generator provides standby power in an emergency. Installed with a Generac automatic transfer switch, it keeps your home supplied with power during a power outage, even if you are not home. The 6237 sold by Norwall Power Systems uses the state of the art Evolution Controller to handle all generator functions and ensure trouble free operation to keep the generator ready for use at all times. The Generac 8kW Guardian Generator comes with a 5 year limited consumer warranty.
Standby Generators from Generac operate on either LP gas or Natural Gas and are convertible in the field to accommodate either installation. The home's current fuel supply―either natural gas or LP gas―is usually the deciding factor when selecting the type of generator fuel. LP gas installations provide 8000 watts of capacity while natural gas provides 7000 watts. Fuel consumption at half load is about .87 gallons per hour for LP gas, and about 72 cubic feet per hour for natural gas. Fuel consumption is directly related to the electrical load and varies continuously during normal operation. Required fuel pressure to generator fuel inlet at all load ranges 3.5" - 7" water column for natural gas or 10" - 12" water column for LP gas.
The 410 cc air-cooled, overhead-cam industrial engine was designed and manufactured specifically for use in Generac's standby generators. It runs at 3600 RPM and is capable of producing up to 14.8 horsepower. Engine features include "Spiny-Lok" cast iron cylinder walls for extra rigidity and durability, a fully pressurized oil lubrication system, electronic ignition, and a 2 year / 200 hour oil change schedule for extended operation before maintenance is required.
The Evolution Controller by Generac operates the standby generator. When an outage occurs, it starts the generator and instructs the transfer switch to move the house onto generator power. During operation, it constantly monitors the load and engine speed to ensure consistent, utility grade power suitable for the most sensitive of electronics. At the same time, it monitors various sensors to ensure trouble-free operation.
Other features of the Evolution Controller include a programmable exercise period which keeps the generator lubricated and extends the life of seals and bearings. It includes a smart battery charger to keep the battery charged at its optimum level, a sophisticated fault detection system, and alerts the homeowner when maintenance is required. A dealer programmable start delay allows a 2 to 1500 second startup delay to prevent starting during momentary outages and voltage sags.
An optional wireless remote allows monitoring of the generator's status from inside the home. The advanced wireless remote allows you to remotely control generator functions, set maintenance alerts and exercise cycles, and test the generator. Mobile Link allows remote monitoring of generator status via web, email or texts.
The alternator generates electricity using a revolving magnetic field design which provides better voltage regulation and higher surge capacity than a stationary field. Combined with skewed stators on a stationary armature, the generator output is clean and steady even when the load is constantly changing. The high surge capacity allows the generator to start motors, even when other appliances have the generator under load.
The 6237 is 48 inches wide, 25 inches deep, and 29 inches high. With an eye pleasing design, an enclosure that resists corrosion, and a 62db noise level that is quieter than most central air conditioning units, this generator will fit well into any neighborhood. The unit cover opens to allow easy access for maintenance and locks with a key to prevent tampering.
Pre-wired 50 amp automatic transfer switch has a 30 foot whip to connect to the provided 5 foot pre-wired whip and external connection box. The pre-wired 2 foot whip, which is color coded, connects into the existing electrical panel. Rated Nema 1 (indoor installation only) has a total of 10 circuits in varying amperages. UL Listed.

We talked about buying a generator and about the different kinds. The portables did not meet our needs because of the hook up problems my wife would have met when home alone. Watching the videos from Generac pursueded us to go with the automatic type. I bought this model but realized after receiving the transfer
switch would not work for us.(We have a 2oo amp service) I then ordered the 200 amp transfer switch and wired, piped in the gas received the authorization code, typed in the information. Turned on the unit and presto! Instant gratification. No more worries about the loss of power in the winter or summer. No dragging out a portable generator hooking up and dragging gas. We bought one for our needs which was a furnace in winter and AC and freezer in summer plus lights and TV.

I have installed many of these units and service them. They are a great product for those interested in standby power for 10 branch circuits with entry level cost.

The directions made for easy installation. Quiet operation for 3500 square foot home. Powers all necessary appliances and heat source during outages. I would recommend the cold weather package for easy start up in extreme cold outside temperatures. Technical support from Generac was not easy to obtain, but after a glitch was remedied, the generator has worked fine. Purchased in November 2012, but used for the first two times the first week in February 2014. The generator performs a weekly test cycle to keep the engine seals lubricated. I'm happy with my purchase.

I searched for 4 years to find the best opton for reliable house standby generator. I ruled out gasoline and propane because the original costs for containers and fuel were just too high. Just when I was about to give up I saw an article touting the reliability of utility natural gas delivery if the grid goes down. Since natural gas is not dependent on electricity for delivery I knew I was on to something. I have a 1300 square foot house, mostly gas appliances and when I gave it some hard thought I knew that natural gas was the way to go. I purchased the Generac 8kw system through Norwall who included the inverter system for $2200 delivered after running a 50 ft gas line to the backyard and having my electrician, who is highly skilled install the accompanying transfer switch, I knew I had made a good decision. If I had purchased a gasoline or propane based system I could not have purchased the fuel and containers for the cost of the generac. I must say that Norwall customer service was really good, far better in fact than the folks at Generac. If you buy from Norwall don't even bother calling Generac customer service in my opinion. I got the natural gas line installed in 1/2 a day and my ace electrician installed the transfer switch in my downstairs room, opposite the outside electrical panel and he did it in 6 hours, he is the quiet brilliant type of guy, lucky me.
So what this got me was an 8kw standby generator that works flawlessly, self testing once a week and 3 weeks ago, we had a late night 3 1/2 power outage and in 20 seconds my generator kicked in and I happened to look out my front door and since I am on the boundry line of San franccisco, all I could see in all directions was blackness and my house was totally in operational mode. I made a good decision in selecting the perfect type of backup system that in my opinion is better than a solar system with huge battery banks for storage. I felt so smug because I am a late night guy and I had power all through the night. I swear that as the night wore on it got difficult to hear the generator at all. Lucky me I made the right decision to not turn my backyard into a fuel depot , dangerous with flammable fuel products. If not gasoline, the cost of propane cylinders is insane and the total cost to me for the generator and install was $3300. I had to pass this on and give a big shout out to the pros at Norwall who are knowledgeable and courteous and engaging. What a steal and I love patting myself on the back at the same time!

Purchased a 8kW Generac and installation went extremely well. First time installing one with propane fuel supply. The first one I installed had to be ordered either natural gas or propane but the newer version is unique. I also purchased a Generac 2700 pressure washer which I am very satisfied with. Although trying to get technical support from Generac leaves a lot to be desired.

We purchased the 8KW with 50 amp service in August and I am really pleased. It is hooked up to the natural gas that comes into the house. I have a small (1200 sq ft)house with all gas appliances and we load tested it and turned on all the appliances and the electricity stayed steady and perfect. The only thing our electrician would like is for Generac to give an extra 1 foot in the pig tail that is attached to the generator. In Massachusetts, the generator has to be 5 feet away from the house and that's all Generac gives is 5 feet. That's not quite enough. We are very happy we bought it though.
